ARTHRITIS OF THE HIP JOINT

HOME EXERCISES FOR THE FIRST 8 WEEKS
AFTER TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT
Try To Do At Least 3 Exercise Sessions Per Day

  1. Ankle Exercise:
    1. Lie flat in bed.
    2. Point your toes toward the foot of the bed.
    3. Point your toes toward your knee.
    4. Move your ankle in a circle.
  1. Knee Isometric:
    1. Lie on your back with the legs straight.
    2. Tighten your thigh muscles thinking as you do so that you are pushing your knee into the bed.
    3. Hold the contraction for 5 counts and then release.
    4. Do this 5 times.
  1. Buttock Isometric:
    1. While lying, squeeze your buttock muscles together for a count of 5 and then release.
    2. Do this 5 times.
  1. Hip Flexion:
    1. While lying, slide the operated side foot up toward your buttock and then slide back.
    2. Do this 5 times.
  1. Knee Extension:
    1. While lying, place a rolled towel about the size of a toilet roll under the knee.
    2. Then contract your muscles so that the foot rises from the bed.
    3. Hold for a count of 5 and then release.
    4. Do this 5 times.
